How do I adjust the rear brake lever?

One of the most common ways to change the position of the brake lever is to crash the bike on the right side and bend your brake lever all to hell. However, we don't recommend this for newbies. There is a more scientific way.

If you look through the opening on the footpeg bracket in this photo, you can see a U-clevis with threads and a jam-nut to hold it in place. Once you get a good look at it things should appear obvious.

Start by taking off the right exhaust can. It's quite easy: two bolts and wiggle it off. This will give you access to the adjuster.

There are two nuts on the plunger bolt: one on top of the lever bracket and one below. (Well, three really, but don't touch the one by the rubber boot.)


You will have to disconnect the bracket from the brake lever to rotate the bottom nut. Take out the cotter pin and remove the bolt holding the lever to the clevis.

Loosen the top nut, and then rotate the clevis to adjust the bottom nut to your liking. Moving the bracket up lowers the front of the brake lever, and vice-versa. Then, tighten back down the top nut.

Reassemble, using a new cotter pin.

Adjusting the rear brake light switch

On the right side, take off the seat & right side panel, loosen the plastic locknut (shown), adjust, tighten locknut... Ta-daa!

The nut is a locknut to hold that cylindrical switch housing. It's just a plastic locknut assembly and is prone to vibration maladjustment...

After you loosen the locknut, turn the threaded cylinder counter-clockwise to make the switch close earlier. If the light won't come on, make the connection longer; if it won't go off, make the link shorter. If you have to make several turns of the brake light switch to reach your desired setting, you should unplug the switch first, to avoid causing damage to the wiring by twisting.

There's a little lightweight spring that pulls a plunger that closes the circuit. You can also check the switch by gently pulling down on it from behind where the spring attaches to it. If the ignition is on, the brake light should come on. This is the spring to which the switch attaches.
